Georgian comfort food, baked in a tandoor
Sakartvelo duona is a small Georgian spot that locals treat as a hidden gem, beloved for genuine comfort food at fair prices. The menu is intentionally focused on breads and soups baked in a traditional tandoor oven rather than a wide spread of grilled dishes, and the warmth of the owners is as much a draw as the cooking. The atmosphere is cosy and unpretentious, and the place is dog-friendly.
Khachapuri — cheese-filled bread — is the headline specialty, alongside a traditional kharcho soup and a hearty bean soup (ask for adjika to go with it). Bread fresh from the tandoor anchors the table, and baked goods are available to take away from the market counter. Note it does not do a broad range of grilled meats or khinkali; this is bread-and-soup territory, done very well.
Good to know
Sakartvelo duona sits at Kalvarijų g. 61, on the lively stretch north of the river near Kalvarijų Market — a short hop from the centre rather than in the Old Town. The kitchen is deliberately narrow in scope, so come for khachapuri, soups and fresh bread rather than a full grill menu.
- Best for
- khachapuri, kharcho and bean soup; takeaway bread from the counter.
- Dog-friendly, cosy and well-priced — a local favourite.
- Confirm current opening hours with the venue before visiting.
