A quiet house party behind the Old Town's back streets
The Grotthuss hides on Ligoninės gatvė, a quiet medieval cobblestone lane that most visitors never find, yet the Gate of Dawn and Town Hall are both an easy walk away. The atmosphere is what regulars come back for: stone façades, marble floors, original paintings by Lithuanian artists and an aristocratic, house-party feel that's the opposite of a chain lobby.
Rooms run spacious with high ceilings, and the bathrooms are a genuine highlight — heated floors, marble finishes and deep bathtubs. Breakfast is another: a wide, beautifully presented spread of meats, cheeses, fish and pastries, served near the winter garden of La Pergola, the hotel's restaurant. In summer, the inner courtyard terrace facing the old defensive wall is one of the loveliest places in the Old Town to do nothing at all.
Good to know
This is the choice for travellers who want Old Town character with peace and quiet — the lane sees little traffic, and staff are warm and flexible, happy to arrange early luggage drop-off or store bags after checkout. Book a courtyard-facing room in summer if you can.
The quibbles are small but worth knowing. Reception isn't staffed around the clock — the hotel runs a responsive WhatsApp line instead — and the standard 4pm check-in feels late to some. Beds come with few, fairly thin pillows (staff bring more on request), the in-room light panels take some figuring out, a few rooms show cosmetic wear in the carpets, and front-facing rooms catch the occasional rumble of cars over the cobblestones.
