The short version
  • Sweeping panorama over the Old Town, church spires and the Užupis valley
  • A calm, well-tended park that locals use for walks, picnics and reading
  • One of the best low-effort sunset spots within walking distance of the centre
  • Remnants of the old city wall and a small historical museum tucked into the slope

Why visit Bastion Hill

Bastion Hill (Subačiaus g. 18, on the southern lip of the Old Town) is one of those viewpoints Vilniečiai keep slightly to themselves. The slope is laid out as a neat, green park, and from the upper terrace you look straight across the rooftops to the church spires of the historic centre and down into the Užupis valley. It is the kind of place to bring a coffee, sit on the grass and let the city arrange itself in front of you.

Beyond the view, the hill carries real history: it sits on the line of the old defensive wall, and you will find surviving fragments of the fortifications along with a small museum dug into the slope for anyone who wants the back-story. In summer the leafy trees can screen parts of the panorama, so for the cleanest sightlines and the best photos come in the golden hour, when the light catches the Baroque towers below.

  • Address: Subačiaus g. 18, Vilnius Old Town
  • Best time: late afternoon to sunset for the clearest views and softest light
  • Free to enter the park; an easy walk from Cathedral Square or the Gates of Dawn
  • Pair it with neighbouring viewpoints for a short hill-walking loop
