A wide green grassy meadow in a park under a bright sky, with scattered birch and deciduous trees casting shadows, and people relaxing in the distance.
The short version
  • A peaceful, low-traffic alternative to the busier Three Crosses and Gediminas viewpoints
  • Wide views over the Old Town, Bernardine Garden and the rooftops below
  • A favourite local sunset spot with room to sit and breathe
  • Reached by a short, steep climb on recently rebuilt stairs

Why climb Bekešo Kalnas

Bekešo kalnas (Bekeš Hill) is the quiet one of the Vilnius hilltops. Set within the green expanse of Kalnai Park on the Užupis side of the river, it delivers a panorama every bit as good as its famous neighbours — the Old Town spread out below, the Bernardine Garden in the valley and the church towers catching the light — but with a fraction of the crowds. It is the spot to come for a calm sunset, a flask of something warm and a bit of room to yourself.

The hill is named after Caspar Bekeš, a 16th-century Hungarian commander once buried here, and it carries a faint sense of that history. It can be a little tricky to find: the usual route is a path that climbs behind a school in Užupis, and there is a short, steep stretch to the top. The good news is that the steepest stairs have recently been rebuilt, making the climb to the viewpoint noticeably easier than it once was.

  • Location: Kalnai Park, off Krivių g., above the Užupis district
  • Best time: clear evenings for sunset over the Old Town
  • Free to visit; a short but steep walk — wear sensible shoes
  • Combine with Užupis and the riverside Bernardine Garden below

Where it is
