The heart of the city

Cathedral Square (Katedros aikštė) is the spacious, well-kept plaza that has anchored Vilnius life for centuries. It is framed by some of the city's most recognisable architecture — the neoclassical Vilnius Cathedral and its tall, free-standing Bell Tower — and opens onto Gediminas Hill behind. Throughout the year it serves as the city's main stage, hosting festivals, parades, concerts and public gatherings.

The square is at its most enchanting over the Christmas and New Year holidays, when it fills with a festive market and the city's famously decorated tree. It is also the obvious place to begin exploring: from here you can climb the Bell Tower for panoramic Old Town views, look for the 'Stebuklas' (miracle) tile underfoot, and set off down Pilies Street into Senamiestis. Note that parking nearby can be limited and costly, so arriving on foot or by public transport is easier.

  • Climb the Bell Tower for panoramic Old Town views
  • Find the 'Stebuklas' tile and make a wish
  • Visit during Advent for the Christmas market and tree
  • Best reached on foot — nearby parking is limited

Good to know

Cathedral Square is open and free to enter at any hour; the Cathedral, Bell Tower and crypts keep their own visiting times and tickets. The square sits at the junction of Gediminas Avenue and Pilies Street, making it the most convenient orientation point in the city centre.
