Presidential Palace Grounds

The grounds around Lithuania's Presidential Palace are a beautiful, tranquil public space in the heart of the Old Town, just off Universiteto gatvė. Visitors praise the well-maintained courtyard, the classical architecture, the fountain and the plentiful seating, which together make this a calm spot for a quiet rest between sights. The palace itself has served as the official residence and workplace of Lithuania's head of state since the country regained independence.

The headline event is the solemn flag-replacement ceremony held in Daukantas Square (Daukanto aikštė), in front of the palace, every Sunday at 12:00. Opened by trumpets and drums, soldiers in fourteenth-century military dress march out through the main gates to demonstrate a medieval drill, followed by the Guard of Honour in modern full dress who lower, replace and raise the state flags. The short ceremony (roughly 5–10 minutes) is free to watch and a real highlight if your visit falls on a Sunday.

Beyond the ceremony, the courtyard often features family-friendly touches such as a giant outdoor chess set and bean bags, and in December the space is decorated with Christmas lights and hosts choral concerts. Note that tours of the palace interior must be registered in advance and run to a separate schedule; ceremony times and access can change for state occasions, so confirm before relying on them.
