Signatories' House (The House of Signatories)

The Signatories' House (Signatarų namai) is one of the most meaningful addresses in Lithuania: the Pilies gatvè townhouse where the Council of Lithuania signed the Act of Independence on 16 February 1918, proclaiming the restoration of an independent Lithuanian state. Today a branch of the National Museum of Lithuania, it lets you stand in the very room where that document was signed — a moment many visitors find genuinely moving, especially with the context a good guide provides.

The exhibits walk through the era of Lithuania's national rebirth: the people, the politics and the day itself, displayed across period rooms in a handsomely restored building whose façade carries the museum's name in large gilded letters. History enthusiasts come away fascinated, and friendly, well-informed staff are repeatedly singled out in reviews. The displays are fairly text-heavy and can feel sparse to anyone not already invested in the subject, which is why hiring a guide — or joining a tour or one of the museum's educational programmes — is so often recommended to get the most from a visit.

The house sits midway along Pilies gatvė, the Old Town's main pedestrian street, so it slots easily into a walk between Cathedral Square and the Town Hall. As an active museum, admission prices and opening hours change, and the National Museum of Lithuania runs periodic free-admission days; check the official museum site for current tickets, hours and any special offers before you go.
