The short version
  • The city's headline Christmas tree, on Cathedral Square in the heart of the Old Town
  • Redesigned every year with creative, often surprising themes and lighting
  • Regularly ranked among the most beautiful Christmas trees in Europe
  • The festive centrepiece of the Christmas market that fills the square
  • Most magical after dark — come in the evening for the lights and fewer crowds

What you're seeing

Each winter, Cathedral Square (Katedros aikštė) becomes the stage for the Vilnius Christmas Tree — an attraction the city has turned into something of an art form. Rather than a standard decorated spruce, the tree is reimagined with a fresh creative concept every year, wrapped in elaborate lighting and large-scale ornaments. The results are striking enough that the tree is repeatedly cited among the most beautiful in Europe, and it draws admiring crowds from the moment it is lit.

The design changes annually, so no two visits look the same — and while the more experimental years can divide opinion, the overall reaction is overwhelmingly warm. The tree anchors the wider Christmas market that fills the square, with stalls, food and a festive glow spilling across the Old Town. It is the photograph everyone wants from Vilnius in December.

  • Location: Cathedral Square (Katedros aikštė), in front of Vilnius Cathedral, Old Town
  • Season: typically lit in late November and standing through early January
  • Design: a completely new theme, lighting scheme and decorations each year
  • Free to visit and admire, day or night
  • Best after dark and later in the evening — better lights, fewer crowds, easier photos

How to make it count

Time your visit for after sunset, when the lighting is at its best and the daytime crowds have thinned, then pair the tree with a wander through the Christmas market stalls around the square. From here it is a short, atmospheric walk to the Cathedral, Gediminas Avenue and the lanes of the Old Town, all especially lovely under winter lights. Dates shift a little each year, so check the current festive programme before you travel.
