What you're seeing

Vincas Kudirka Square (Vinco Kudirkos aikštė) is one of central Vilnius's busiest open spaces, set right on Gedimino prospektas, the city's grand pedestrian-friendly boulevard. It takes its name from Vincas Kudirka, the 19th-century writer and physician who penned the words and music of 'Tautiška giesmė', Lithuania's national anthem; his monument stands at the heart of the square and is handsomely illuminated after dark.

More than a memorial, the square works as a everyday social hub. Locals use it as an easy landmark to meet at, settle onto its many benches to rest and watch the world go by, and gather in the evenings when the lighting gives the space a warm glow. The atmosphere is relaxed and a little youthful, with skateboarders, students and the occasional busker adding to the energy. As with any heavily used central plaza, the upkeep can be uneven at times, but its position and buzz keep it firmly on most Old Town wanders.

  • Location: Gedimino pr., 01103 Vilnius, on the main boulevard near the city centre
  • Cost: free, open-air, accessible at any hour
  • Named for Vincas Kudirka, author of the Lithuanian national anthem
  • Benches, evening lighting, underground parking and nearby public toilets
  • An easy meeting point and rest stop between Gediminas Avenue's sights

How to make it count

Treat the square as a natural pause point on a stroll down Gedimino prospektas rather than a destination in itself. It sits within easy walking distance of Cathedral Square and the wider Old Town, so it slots neatly between bigger sights — pick up a coffee from one of the surrounding cafés, take a bench, and enjoy the passing parade. Come back after sunset to see the monument lit and the square at its most atmospheric.
