The Old Town's hidden gem

Tucked onto narrow Dominikonų Street in the heart of the Old Town, the Dominican Church of the Holy Spirit is the kind of place you could walk straight past. Its entrance is unassuming and easy to miss — which is exactly why visitors describe the moment they step inside as breathtaking. The interior unfolds into a sumptuous display of late-Baroque and Rococo decoration, with a sweep of side chapels, ornamented altars and frescoed surfaces that rank among the most beautiful in the city.

Beneath the church lie extensive crypts and catacombs, part of the layered history of this Dominican complex. Above ground the atmosphere is peaceful and contemplative, well suited to quiet reflection, and the church is at its most memorable when filled with the sound of its organ and choir during a service.

Good to know

The church stands at Dominikonų g. 8, a couple of minutes' walk from Vilnius University and the Presidential Palace. It is an active church and the spiritual home of Vilnius's Polish community, with Masses conducted in Polish, so it can be busy around service times — dress and behave respectfully, and keep voices low if a Mass is under way. Public information online is limited and opening hours can vary, so the most reliable way to see the interior is to visit around a scheduled service; check locally before making a special trip.
