  • Free admission on the last Sunday of every month

What you're visiting

The Kazys Varnelis House-Museum is one of those Old Town finds that visitors describe as a hidden gem — much larger on the inside than its modest exterior suggests. It pairs the optical, geometric art of Lithuanian-American painter Kazys Varnelis with the collection he amassed over a lifetime: historical furniture, sculptures, maps, rare books and artifacts, juxtaposed so that modern op-art and centuries-old objects share the same rooms. As the first collector's museum in Lithuania and the only art-dedicated branch of the National Museum of Lithuania, it offers a genuinely world-class experience.

Visitors can explore a number of rooms independently, while the deeper reaches of the collection — including Varnelis's 10,000-book library and his studio — are seen on a guided tour. Those tours, led by passionate guides, are the reason the museum is so well loved.

  • Address: Didžioji g. 26, 01128 Vilnius (Old Town)
  • Type: art and collector's house-museum (branch of the National Museum of Lithuania)
  • A standard ticket gives partial access; the full collection is seen on a guided tour

Planning your visit

Because part of the museum is accessible only with a guide, it's well worth booking a guided tour in advance by phone or email; tours run roughly 1.5–2 hours and open up the library and studio you'd otherwise miss. The museum is generally open daytime hours and closed on Mondays, and admission is modest, with reduced rates for children and families — verify the current times and prices before a special trip. A notable perk: entry is free for everyone on the last Sunday of each month.
