Monument of Stanisław Moniuszko

The Monument of Stanisław Moniuszko honours the composer and conductor (1819–1872) regarded as the father of Polish national opera, whose works draw on the folk and patriotic themes of the former Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. Moniuszko spent a formative period in Vilnius, working as an organist and music teacher in the mid-19th century, which makes the city a fitting home for his memorial. The bust stands in the small park beside the Church of St Catherine, just off Vilniaus gatvė.

The monument itself is modest — a bust on a plinth decorated with a lyre — and some visitors find the marker understated. Its real appeal is the setting. The square in front of the elegant St Catherine's Church is clean, quiet and beautifully maintained, with plenty of benches, greenery and, in the warmer months, a relaxed café atmosphere, making it a welcome pause away from busier streets.

Families appreciate the children's playground nearby, and the spot works well as a gentle resting point while exploring this part of the Old Town. Combine it with a look at St Catherine's Church, which hosts concerts and exhibitions, for a small dose of Vilnius's musical heritage in one easy stop.
