Saint Catherine's Church

Saint Catherine's Church (Šv. Kotrynos bažnyčia) is best known today not as a place of worship but as one of Vilnius's most atmospheric concert halls. The handsome late-Baroque building on Vilniaus gatvė, with its pair of pink-and-white towers, was raised in stages between 1625 and 1743 for a Benedictine convent. After serving as a warehouse during the Soviet era, it was carefully restored and reopened in 2006, specifically adapted so its interior could host performances.

Visitors come for the acoustics. The main nave is widely praised for the way it makes music sound, and a typical season runs from classical-music festivals and chamber recitals to choral evenings and theatrical pop tributes, so there is usually something on whatever your taste. The interior shows its age in places and seating can be a little cramped, but the combination of candle-lit Baroque architecture and a live programme leaves most people with a lasting impression. Practical comforts for a historic venue include a coat check and restrooms.

The church sits right in the Old Town, an easy walk from Cathedral Square and the main Pilies–Vilniaus axis, so it pairs naturally with a wander through the historic centre. Because access is tied to the events calendar rather than fixed visiting hours, the best way to see inside is to book a concert; check the current programme and ticketing before you go, as schedules change with the season.
