Sapieginė Trail
The Sapieginė Trail is a beloved pocket of wild-feeling forest on the edge of the Antakalnis district, offering a genuine nature escape without leaving Vilnius. The hilly, wooded terrain is laced with winding paths that climb and dip, so a walk here doubles as a workout — which is exactly why it has become a favourite of local trail runners as well as families out for a weekend ramble. The peaceful, leafy atmosphere feels worlds away from the city, even though the centre is only a short drive away.

Beyond the scenery, the woods hide a few points of interest for the curious: old bunkers and other historical traces can be spotted along the way, adding a touch of exploration to the exercise. The flip side of the trail's untamed charm is that waymarking is notoriously sparse and confusing, so first-timers should be ready for a bit of navigational adventure. Downloading an offline map or a GPS track before you set off makes the network much easier to follow.
Wear proper footwear, as paths can be muddy and uneven after rain, and the climbs are steeper than you might expect for an urban green space. The trail is best in spring through autumn, though it is quietly atmospheric in winter too. It sits among the green spaces that ring the city — a good option if you want forest rather than manicured park, and an easy pairing with the riverside walks and regional parks elsewhere around Vilnius.
