Orthodox Church of St Nicholas
St Nicholas' Church (Šv. Mikalojaus cerkvė) is one of the oldest Orthodox churches in Vilnius, standing at Didžioji g. 12 in the heart of the Old Town. Visitors describe it as a beautiful, cozy and serene sanctuary, its reverent mood deepened by the scent of incense and richly decorated, well-preserved interior. It is an easy and meaningful stop on any walk along Didžioji Street.

The site has remarkable depth of history: a wooden Orthodox church is believed to have stood here from the mid-14th century, associated with Uliana of Tver, and a brick church was raised in 1514 by Konstanty Ostrogski to commemorate the victory at the Battle of Orsha. It passed to the Uniates in 1609 and, after fires in the 1740s, was rebuilt in a Baroque spirit, leaving the layered Russian-Byzantine character admired today.
For the most affecting experience, time your visit to coincide with a service and listen to the highly praised Orthodox chant. This is an active place of worship, so dress and behave respectfully — modest dress is appreciated — and keep voices low. Service times can vary, so check locally before planning a specific visit.
