The short version
  • Founded in 1570 — the oldest library in Lithuania
  • Magnificent historic halls with frescoes and intricate woodwork
  • The famous Pranciškus Smuglevičius Hall, a true book museum
  • Lithuania's largest repository of manuscripts and old publications
  • Rare books, antique globes and historic scientific instruments

What to expect

The Vilnius University Library, established in 1570, is the oldest library in Lithuania and one of the oldest in this part of Europe — older even than the university itself. Set within the university's atmospheric Old Town campus, it is celebrated for its sheer beauty: a sequence of historic halls with magnificent architecture, ceiling frescoes and intricate carved woodwork. The serene reading rooms are so photogenic that visitors regularly reach for Harry Potter comparisons, and the library is a highlight of any architecture-minded visit.

Beyond the surfaces, the library safeguards Lithuania's largest collection of old publications: rare books, early manuscripts, and a celebrated set of giant antique globes and instruments. The centrepiece for visitors is the Pranciškus Smuglevičius Hall, which displays unique 'book monuments' and can usually be viewed on its own. To explore the wider historic ensemble you will generally need to join a guided tour booked in advance, and an entrance fee may apply, so plan ahead rather than turning up expecting full access.

  • Address: Universiteto g. 3, 01513 Vilnius (Vilnius University campus)
  • Founded 1570; oldest library in Lithuania
  • Smuglevičius Hall usually viewable; wider tours need advance booking
  • An entrance fee may apply for guided visits

Visiting tips

The library is part of the university complex just off Pilies and Universiteto streets, so combine it with the courtyards and St John's Church for a single deep-dive into nearly five centuries of campus history. Submit a tour request through the official library site in advance if you want to see the full historic halls, and check current opening hours and any entrance fee before you visit.
