What you're visiting

This monument honours King Mindaugas, the first Grand Duke and only crowned King of Lithuania, widely regarded as the founder of the Lithuanian state. His coronation on 6 July 1253 is commemorated today as the national Statehood Day (King Mindaugas' Day), a public holiday across Lithuania. The seated bronze figure was unveiled in front of the National Museum of Lithuania in 2003, marking the 750th anniversary of that coronation.

It's a quick stop rather than a ticketed attraction — a key city landmark set in a pleasant park, with benches and greenery for a relaxing break. A charming, unintended detail: the polished slope at the monument's base has become a popular slide for children, which adds a surprisingly lively atmosphere to an otherwise solemn historical site.

  • Location: Arsenalo g., 01143 Vilnius, beside the National Museum of Lithuania
  • Type: public monument / sculpture (King Mindaugas, unveiled 2003)

Visiting and nearby

Photographers love the spot for its sightline: stand right and you can frame the king with Gediminas Tower rising behind him on Castle Hill. It's a natural pairing with Cathedral Square and the castle, all within a couple of minutes' walk, so it slots neatly into any Old Town circuit.

From here it's a short stroll to the Palace of the Grand Dukes and the riverside, and the monument to Grand Duke Gediminas on Cathedral Square makes a fitting companion piece in the city's founding story.
