St Johns' Church (Šv. Jonų bažnyčia)

The Church of St John the Baptist and St John the Apostle and Evangelist — known simply as St Johns' Church (Šv. Jonų bažnyčia) — is one of the architectural highlights of the Vilnius University ensemble, at Šv. Jono g. 12 in the heart of the Old Town. Founded in the 14th century and given its dramatic late-Baroque facade and interior in the 18th century, it captivates visitors with a grand high altar composition, a monumental organ and a serene, light-filled atmosphere.

Because of its remarkable acoustics, the church doubles as a beloved concert and ceremonial venue, and it remains an active place of worship within the university. A highly rated gospel choir often features at the Sunday mass, and the church hosts religious-education courses and sacramental services alongside its cultural programme. It is part of the Vilnius University Museum, so entry to the university courtyards and to the bell tower may carry separate fees.

The single biggest draw for many is the adjoining bell tower — the tallest structure in the Old Town at roughly 68 metres — reached by elevator for most of the climb and then a short flight of historic wooden stairs to an open observation level with sweeping views. We cover the tower in detail on its own page. As with any working church, mass times and access can change, so check ahead and visit respectfully.
