What to expect

The Vilnius Picture Gallery (Vilniaus paveikslų galerija), part of the Lithuanian National Museum of Art, occupies the restored Chodkevičiai Palace on Didžioji gatvė in the Old Town. The building itself is a draw: an early-17th-century palace remodelled in elegant late-classical style, with handsome period interiors and a calm inner courtyard that many visitors enjoy as much as the art. The permanent collection traces Lithuanian painting and sculpture from the 16th to the early 20th centuries, complemented by a rotating programme of temporary exhibitions.

Beyond the galleries, this is a genuinely active cultural hub. The palace regularly hosts classical-music concerts, lectures, educational programmes, art-therapy sessions and children's activities, so it rewards a second look at the events calendar. Most visitors describe friendly, helpful staff. One practical caveat worth noting: although the gallery states it is adapted for visitors with reduced mobility, some guests have reported real accessibility challenges at the entrance, so contact the gallery ahead if step-free access matters to you.

  • Address: Didžioji g. 4, 01128 Vilnius (Chodkevičiai Palace)
  • Focus: Lithuanian art, 16th–early 20th century, plus temporary shows
  • Free admission on the last Sunday of the month (ministry-run museums)
  • Also hosts concerts, lectures and educational programmes

Visiting tips

Didžioji Street runs through the spine of the Old Town, so the gallery slots neatly into a wander between the Town Hall and Cathedral Square. Time your visit for the last Sunday of the month for free entry, and check the events listings if you would like to catch a concert in the palace halls. Opening hours and ticket prices can change seasonally — confirm them on the official site before you go.
